Survey data from the International Food Information Council (IFIC) found that 70 percent of American consumers are trying to consume less sugar and 63 percent are trying to consume less high-fructose corn syrup.

The survey of more than 1,000 consumers was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Diabetics this fall.

The IFIC study also found that awareness of trans fats increased from 81 percent to 90 percent between 2006 and 2010, while awareness of omega-3s remained constant at 74 percent. Furthermore, the consumers surveyed reported no increase in efforts to consume more omega-3s.

And despite efforts by health and nutrition professional to educate consumers, 70 percent of those surveyed were unable to identify that calories are what typically cause weight gain.
