United Salad Co. Recalls Fruit Products With Mangoes

United Salad Co. has recalled five brands of fruit products containing mangoes that were being sold at nearly 300 retail outlets in the Pacific Northwest. It is another "downstream" recall of Mexican mangoes believed to be responsible for infecting 121 people in 15 states with Salmonella Braenderup. However, Food Safety News has learned that local health officials are not being asked to participate in any recall verification activities. A Washington State environmental public health official said appropriate local staff should be made aware of the recall. "The company has directly notified all customers who received the recalled product and requested removal from store shelves, " the state official said.  In a press release distributed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company said the recalled products had the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, but that none were associated with any of the illnesses. United Salad Co. said it was recalling its supplier's mangoes to minimize the risk to public health. The recalled products were distributed from Sept. 1-17, 2012 to retailers and supermarkets in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.  The list of recalled brands and pack codes can be found here. Anyone who has the recalled product in their possession should not consume it and should destroy or discard it. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-547-5536 Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific Time).
