More Outbreak-Linked Mangoes Recalled, Many Expired

Two more companies have joined the 13 others who have recalled mangoes imported from Mexico over the past three weeks because the fruits may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella currently causing a nationwide outbreak.   On Wednesday GHW, LLC of Houston, TX recalled a limited number of expired fresh-cut mango products, and on Thursday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Del Monte  Fresh Produce N.A. Inc was recalling fresh-cut mango products also sourced from Agricola Daniella of Mexico, the company whose mangoes are the suspected source of the Salmonella outbreak that has so far sickened 121 people in 15 states.  The expired cut mangoes from GHW include its Island Medley, Mango Spears, Fruit Burst and Fruit Basket Medley varieties sold in Alaska, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Del Monte Produce is voluntarily recalling 1,600 bowls of fresh-cut mangoes distributed to retailers in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.  The product is packaged in a clear plastic 32 oz. bowl with a Del Monte label on top. The top label will also be marked with either a Best By date of 9/18/12 and lot code 05252101 or Best By date 9/22/12 and lot code 03256100. UPCode on the bowls is 7-62357-07532-1. Del Monte says it has notified retailers who received the affected product and directed them to remove it from shelves. Customers who purchased the affected product should throw it out.
